Discover dynamic art from the creative hotbed that is Sydney’s urban city fringe…

The inaugural carriageARTworks is a curated exhibition of contemporary artwork from 13 galleries and artist run initiatives (ARIs)* of the south west city fringe area of Sydney. carriageARTworks will showcase the south west city fringe area as a thriving place for contemporary art in Sydney, exhibiting the work of over 40 artists and expanding art networks through a series of tours, talks and panel discussions.

carriageArtworks has been timed to coincide with the 2009 Sydney Festival and Barrie Kosky’s The Tell-Tale Heart, which will run alongside it.

carriageARTworks is unique in its approach of bringing galleries and ARIs together to curate and present work under one roof in a free exhibition open to everyone. It is rare that Artist Run Initiatives and gallerists get the opportunity to come together under one roof to share their work with the public and talk about their practice.

Ensuring that the exhibition showcases the diversity of creative practices alive in the south west city fringe, contemporary art of all mediums such as painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, glasswork, mixed media assemblages, installations and performance art has been solicited from galleries and ARIs by the following representatives from the local art community: Nicky Ginsberg of NG Art Gallery, Brendan Penzer of At the Vanishing Point – Contemporary Art, Michelle Perry of Wilson Street Gallery and artist representatives- distinguished artist Janet Lawrence, 2008 Paddington Art Prize winner Alan Jones and sculptor Mark Wotherspoon.

The south west city fringe area stretches north to Parramatta Road, east to Bourke Street, south to the Princess Highway through Sydenham, west to Marrickville and Petersham – with CarriageWorks lying at the heart of the area. Here are the exhibiting galleries including some of the artists who will be showing work at carriageARTworks: Four artists from each gallery and ARIs have been selected.

In addition a number of talks and forums will be held with speakers such as celebrated artist Ben Quilty, Artbank senior curator Jackie Dunn, MCA curator Glenn Barkley, arts writer Peter Pinson, renowned art collector Tom Lowenstein to name but a few.

* An Artist Run Initiative (ARI) is a cooperative of artists who are unrepresented by commercial galleries or artist agents.

Visual Art Submissions - Chrysalis: Eco Radio Fundraiser 23 October @ The Zoo

On 23rd October is Chrysalis, which will be a night of beautiful electronica and folk. It's a fundraiser I am organising for 4ZzZ and Eco Radio. I am hoping that some of you visually inclined artists may also be interested in submitting photos to be projected and displayed as part of an exploration of environmental awareness and artistic expression.

'The idea for Chrysalis emerged while looking through the pages of a 1920s book that had scientific illustrations of insects and animals drawn in ink. I realised that art and environmental awareness have always been linked, in beautiful ways.'

Chrysalis will be a night fused with delicate folk, beautiful electronica and visual art with an environmental theme at the Zoo on Thursday 23rd October. Gracing the stage will be Dizzygotheca, Silver Sircus, Mardi Lumsden and Sans Grenadine. This night of luscious music and vivid art will be a fundraiser for 4ZzZ 102.1fm's Eco Radio show.

As well as music, visual art will be part of the night. Established and emerging visual artists are invited to submit photos that explore their own perception of how 'artistic expression meets environmental awareness'.

You can submit photos:
• Via email – jpegs or similar (please email to check if other formats are acceptable) with a resolution of 300 dpi. File size should not exceed 5MB without checking prior to sending.
Photos should be accompanied with a description (up to 100 words) of how it relates to the theme of the evening.

Images will be projected on the night and selected items printed with the artists consent for display. People interested in purchasing copies can email the artists.

Visual Artist Submissions:
Electronic photographic submissions:
RSVP: September 26th 2008
Electronic submission of art: October 9th 2008

Please RSVP to heidim@4zzzfm.org.au
Please email electronic photo submissions to heidi_millington@hotmail.com

I hope this is something you might engage with. Please feel free to forward on to people you know who might be interested.

Peace

Heidi

BEMAC (Brisbane Multicultural Arts Centre)
What Makes BEMAC A Special Organization - Our Positioning

Dear Ladies and Gentleman,

BEMAC, the oldest not-for-profit organization in Queensland, takes a unique three-tiered approach to differentiating ourselves from other not-for-profit entities. These three tiers are:

1.) BEMAC the Educational Institution
2.) BEMAC the Community Integration Organization
3.) BEMAC the Multicultural Arts Organization

BEMAC as an Educational Institution
For well over 20 years, BEMAC has provided an accessible institutional process for the training and guidance of new Australians with immigrant and refugee backgrounds, to enable them to learn the due process of how to belong and contribute to a democratically based institution at a community level. It is one of very few not-for-profit organizations that helps develop the operational, strategic, and managerial skills of new Australians, such that they develop an enhanced and appreciative view of how an integrated and harmonious democratic Australian society functions. It is one of the few organizations were men and women from diverse cultural backgrounds can learn the managerial, strategic, and operational skills needed in the overall functioning of a not-for-profit organization, an opportunity that is unfortunately denied to most new Australians in the current environment.

BEMAC the Community Integration Organization
BEMAC, through its daily operations of working with new Australian’s under the banner of multiculturalism, provides an equally accessible environment where all cultures can meet, share, learn, and appreciate our cultural differences and similarities through the Arts and Humanities. BEMAC provides an umbrella of integration for many diversified cultures to meet, share, and enjoy their unique cultural expressions in a manner that results in a more integrated and respectful cosmopolitan society in Australia.

BEMAC the Multicultural Arts Organization
For two decades, BEMAC has provided an equally accessible organization for providing:
1.) Traditional Cultural Expression (Cultural Maintenance)
2.) Contemporary Multicultural Expression
3.) Emerging Cultural Expression in all its art forms for Australian society in its entirety.

This has always been carried out within a code of conduct and culture that respects and celebrates diversity in a manner that endeavours to engender the professional development of artists and audience appreciation ranging across a continuum from grass roots to globally recognizable levels.

Martin Luther King, Jr. said "Almost always, the creative dedicated minority has made the world better."

Nelson Mandela said "For to be free is not merely to cast off one's chains, but to live in a way that respects and enhances the freedom of others."

I ask of you today, to please help in making Australia better, by helping to enhance these freedoms.
